Two European and two new British records kick off Masters Nationals
October 25, 2024It was an exciting start to the GoCardless Swim England Masters National Championships with two European and two British records being broken.
Two of those came in the final heat of the session where Lucy Charles–Barclay and Daniel Mills both set record breaking efforts.
Charles–Barclay finished with an incredible time of 16:55:36 to take the European record in the Female 30-34 age category.
The Borough of Newham swimmer finished six seconds faster than the previous best, which had stood for six years and been set by Sophie Casson of Carnforth.
The second record of the heat was made by Daniel Mills of Trafford Met as he clocked in at 16.02.09 in the Open/Male 30-34 age category.
Eight seconds separate his time and the previous British best set by Trafford Metro clubmate Christopher Knight back in 2022 (16:10:04).
There was another new European record registered in the Female 70-74 category, as Jayne Stephenson broke Jane Asher’s record that had stood for a magnificent 20 years.
Stephenson finished in a time of 23:26:62, to beat the 2004 record (23:54:74) by a spectacular 28 seconds.
But it was Otter’s Derek Parr who had the honour of claiming the meets first record.
Swimming in the 80-84 Years category, he broke his own British best time by more than 15 seconds as he touched the wall in a time of 24:34.46. His 800m split also set a British record with a time of 12:58.67
