Chelsea is turning her passion for swimming into her ideal student job

Why work for minimum wage when you can turn your passion into a well-paying job?

That’s exactly what 16-year-old Chelsea has done by qualifying as a swimming teacher straight after finishing school. She’s already seeing the benefits – securing flexible, high-paying work that fits around her studies, with plenty of opportunities on the horizon.

Chelsea, who has been a regional breaststroke swimmer for Beacon Swimming Club, for the last eight years says:

“I’m passionate about sharing my love of swimming with others and helping children to learn essential lifesaving skills. It’s so rewarding to watch them improve. Being a swimming teacher is great fun – it takes a lot of energy, good communication and a positive attitude. I smile a lot and focus on creating a friendly, encouraging environment for the children to learn in.”

Chelsea completed her Level One and Level Two Swimming Teacher qualifications during the long summer break after finishing her GCSEs.

“It was great to get qualified before starting my A-levels,” she says. “It means I can pick and choose work around my college hours. Since qualifying, I’ve had several job interviews and already secured work for the new year.”

With swimming teachers in high demand, Chelsea is in the enviable position of being able to choose jobs that fit her schedule and are conveniently located.

“The pay is amazing! There aren’t many jobs for young people where you can earn this well. It’s exciting to know I’ll have extra money for going out, new clothes and, when I hopefully head to university, being able to teach swimming while I’m there will help make student life more affordable. Why would I want to work in a café or bar for minimum wage when I can be a swimming teacher? I’d much rather teach someone to swim than serve them fish and chips.”

Looking ahead to university, Chelsea is confident she’ll be able to secure work during term time wherever she studies or even teach abroad during holidays.

“Ultimately, I’d love to become an architect or interior designer, but teaching swimming will help me achieve my goals by helping me earn a wage whilst I am studying. Plus, I’d like to upskill further and become a part-time swimming coach, too!”
